boss was ‘behind’ the club’s decision to withdraw a contract offer to due to his concerns about the goalkeeper.

The Spaniard put pen to paper on a deal to remain at Old Trafford, only for the club to fail to fulfill their side of the paperwork.

Instead, United presented De Gea with a new offer that was on even greater reduced terms to what he had agreed to.

The Spaniard is yet to agree to those fresh terms and his contract expires in three days, with a resolution no closer to being found.

Despite backing De Gea throughout last season, Ten Hag’s doubts over the Spaniard increased towards the end of the season following costly mistakes against West Ham, Sevilla and Manchester City.

According to the Daily Mail, those doubts were behind the club’s decision to withdraw their offer and it’s now likely that De Gea will leave the club after 12 years at Old Trafford.

United are set to meet with representatives of Inter Milan over the next 48 hours to discuss a deal for Andre Onana.

The Cameroon international played under Ten Hag at Ajax and is accustomed to the Dutchman’s wishes.

Inter are seeking around £43m for the 27-year-old, who they signed for free two years ago.
