Sabitzer, signed on loan from in January, had been enjoying his best spell of form since joining the club having scored twice in the Europa League quarter-final clash with Sevilla on Thursday.

United have been left reeling by a string of injury blows in recent weeks, losing Marcus Rashford in the 2-0 win over Everton this month.

Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane were also both forced off midweek with the Argentina international ruled out for the rest of the season.

With Scott McTominay, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia also missing the trip to Forest, ten Hag was not willing to take any more risks with Sabitzer.

Ten Hag told MUTV after the win: ‘We didn’t take the risk because we already have some injuries, so we have to find out tomorrow [Monday].

‘Hopefully it’s not a big injury. We chose not to go into the game with risk.’

Sabitzer is expected to undergo further assessment at Carrington today.

United’s injury crisis, which also includes long-term absentees Alejandro Garnacho and Donny van de Beek, has come at the worst possible time with the club now facing a pivotal three games which could define their season.

The club head out to Spain for their second leg clash against Sevilla on Thursday before a trip to Wembley for their FA Cup semi-final with Brighton – where they will also be without the suspended Harry Maguire.

United then head to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to take on Spurs in a huge game for the club’s hopes of finishing in the top four.
