boss is ‘hopeful’ that Kobbie Mainoo’s injury is not serious after he left his side’s defeat to on crutches.

The midfielder was superb in a 2-0 win against Arsenal on Saturday and was rewarded with another start against Madrid in Houston on Wednesday night.

However, the 18-year-old had to be replaced just three minutes into the game in Texas after sustaining an injury.

Mainoo was then seen leaving the stadium in a protective boot and requiring crutches.

It sparked concerns that the promising midfielder could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

But, while Ten Hag says he will wait for a full diagnosis, he’s hopeful that the midfielder’s avoided a severe injury.

‘I understand the question but you can never tell straight after a game. We have to wait for what it is,’ said Ten Hag.

‘Hopefully he is not too bad and chances will come.’

Mainoo’s injury could impact United’s transfer plans, with both Fred and Scott McTominay heavily linked with exits from the club.

Sofyan Amrabat, the Fiorentina midfielder, is a target but Ten Hag says he will wait for news on Mainoo before making ‘conclusions’.

‘We wanted to see what levels he could play and against Arsenal we were pleased with his performance,’ said Ten Hag.

‘[Today] we wanted to see if he could repeat that some days after. Now I just wait for the diagnosis and then from there on we will set conclusions.’
