Elliott Investment Management, the former owners of , have submitted a bid to buy a minority stake of ahead of rivals Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim.

United set a deadline of 9pm on Wednesday night for interested parties to submit their offers for the club.

Despite widespread reports that offers had been submitted by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim, it transpired that both parties requested an extension to the deadline.

This was granted by the club but it raises suspicion that neither party was willing to meet the Glazers’ £6bn asking price.

The Americans have said from the outset that they will not necessarily sell the club, despite it being on the market.

Two of the six Glazer siblings remain keen on keeping hold of the club but recognise that they must raise capital in order to continue.

That’s raised the possibility of the club listening to minority stake offers and the Times say Elliott Investment Management submitted an offer last night.

The Americans are former owners of AC Milan and helped the Italians to end their decade-long wait for a league title in 2022.

Should the Glazers accept EIM’s offer, it would see the Americans remain in charge of the club but with the capital to invest in the stadium, training ground and playing squad.

Any such deal would prove highly controversial with United supporters, who are desperate for the Americans to end their 17-year stint at the club.
