Former striker Darren Bent has explained why David Raya should join instead of this summer.

The Gunners have as they look to provide cover and competition to No. 1 .

Raya, 27, has , who finished second in the Premier League last season behind Manchester City.

But ex-England striker Bent is puzzled by Arsenal’s move for Raya and believes the shot-stopper should try to force through a move to Chelsea instead.

Chelsea have also been linked with a move for a new goalkeeper this summer, with Kepa Arrizabalaga largely flattering to deceive at Stamford Bridge and Edouard Mendy leaving the club to move to Saudi Arabia.

‘David Raya is better than Kepa Arrizabalaga,’ Bent told . ‘So why would Chelsea not go for him?

‘And why would David Raya not think, “Hold on, why am I going to Arsenal to play behind Aaron Ramsdale? Why don’t I go to Chelsea and be their number one?”

‘There’s something not quite right with Arsenal’s deal for David Raya. If I was Chelsea, I would be trying to get him.’

Fellow ex-England international , suggesting it makes little sense for the club or the player.

‘The Arsenal thing, I’m really struggling with that,’ Murphy told when asked about the speculation around Brentford shot-stopper Raya.

‘If you go and get him, what does it say to Aaron Ramsdale? Why do you need to pay £40m for a goalkeeper if you’re not going to start him?

‘And from the flip side, if you’re David Raya, your next move has to be to a club where you’ll be number one.

‘There’s no way he’s going to go somewhere and be happy with being the No. 2. The only way you get him in is if you say he’s starting.’

Arsenal have bolstered Mikel Arteta’s squad this summer with the signings of England midfielder Declan Rice, Netherlands defender Jurrien Timber and Germany star Kai Havertz.
