Former striker Kevin Campbell believes Mikel Arteta should try to sign midfielder N’Golo Kante ‘straight away’.
Kante has been one of Chelsea’s most important players over the past seven seasons, making 260 appearances for the Blues and helping the west London club win the Champions League, Premier League, Europa League and FA Cup.
But the French winner is being linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge after a somewhat disappointing season last year in which he struggled with his fitness.
Despite potentially being on the decline, Kante is ‘still one of the best around’ and would be a valuable addition to Arsenal, according to ex-Gunners star Campbell.
Arsenal have already spent almost £100m on new signings this summer, bringing the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Fabio Vieira to the Emirates.
Arteta is also closing in on a £30m deal for Manchester City star Oleksandr Zinchenko, but Campbell believes Arsenal also need a player like Kante to join their ranks.
‘For me, if the money was right – I’d do it straight away,’ Campbell told when asked if Arsenal should target Kante.
‘Kante is someone who knows how to operate in the Premier League, that’s for sure. Yes, he suffered a few injuries last season, but his numbers are still frightening.
‘He’s still one of the best around, and that midfield area is still a massive problem area for Arsenal.
‘We’ve seen them play games where the midfield just can’t get a grip – especially when Thomas Partey isn’t there.
‘We need someone else who knows how to navigate and dominate. I don’t think there has been a better exponent of that midfield engine room in recent years than N’Golo Kante.’
