Celtic hero Chris Sutton was quick to aim a slight at Rangers after their painful Europa League final defeat, and former Gers star Kevin Thomson was not impressed.

Rangers suffered penalty shootout heartbreak in Seville against Frankfurt, losing 5-4 from the spot after a 1-1 draw with the German side.

It looked like another upset win for Giovanni van Bronkhorst’s side after Joe Aribo gave them the lead on 57 minutes, but Rafael Borre equalised just 12 minutes later.

Aaron Ramsey was the one man to miss from the spot in the shootout in a hurtful night for the Welshman and his teammates as they narrowly missed out on European glory.

The former Celtic striker started with some praise for his old rivals when he posted on social media after the match, but quickly turned to a jibe at their apparent luck over the season.

Sutton tweeted: ‘Great effort in the from Rangers and the players have given their all. With the amount of penalties they’ve been awarded this season I fancied them in the shootout mind. Well done to Frankfurt though.’

Thomson, who played for Rangers from 2007-10, was far from impressed, hitting out at Sutton for making a dig at the cruelest of times.

Thomson replied: ‘Lack of class that as a ex player!! Don’t surprise me tho!! To see fellow pro’s regardless of rivalry get beat like that, it’s a cruel game at best of times.’

Van Bronckhorst said after the loss: ‘With penalties it’s a lottery – tonight we weren’t on the good side.

‘I can’t complain with everything my players gave today. If you play a lot of big finals you will have memories that last for ever when you win them, but when you lose it will hurt a lot. I lost a World Cup final.

‘We have to move on. We have a big game on Saturday and next season we have to start all over again.’
