Frenkie de Jong has told and that he wants to remain at Camp Nou this summer, according to reports in Spain.
United have reached an initial agreement with Barcelona over a €65 million (£56m) fee plus add-ons for the Dutch midfielder.
De Jong is Erik ten Hag’s priority target for the summer transfer window, with United’s new manager viewing the 25-year-old as a key part of his plans at Old Trafford.
Barcelona had hoped to secure a fee closer to €100m (£86.4m) for De Jong as they need the money to finance their summer spending.
But De Jong could scupper Barca’s transfer plans as claim that the midfielder has told the Spanish club and United that he has no intention of leaving this summer.
The report claims that De Jong is unhappy with Barca’s attempt to push him out of the club and is determined to stay at Camp Nou for another season.
Speaking during the post-season international break last month, De Jong made his preference clear.
‘I prefer to stay with Barcelona,’ De Jong told ESPN.
‘Barcelona is just my dream club. Also from a young age. I just said it too. I’ve never regretted my choice despite the fact that I had hoped for more in terms of prizes than I’ve achieved so far. But I have never regretted my choice.’
De Jong also denied any contact with Ten Hag, who he played under at Ajax before his £65m move to Barcelona in 2019.
‘What I’m saying, there is absolutely nothing of an agreement or anything official. At the moment there is no question of it at all,’ said the midfielder.
‘Not that I know of in any case. Or they must not have told me, but I don’t think so.’
