Wolverhampton Wanderers flop Fabio Silva is set to join Belgian top flight side Anderlecht on loan, two years after singing for Wolves for a whopping £35m.
The Midlands club paid that figure for a player who was 17 at the time and had only made 18 senior appearances in professional football, scoring three goals.
The price tag placed on the Portuguese youngster led plenty of fans to expect that he would regularly contribute to the first-team and challenge established striker Raul Jimenez for a starting place, but the reality has been far less impressive.
Silva has made 62 appearances for Wolves since joining two summers ago, but scored a meagre four goals in that time. He failed to score at all in the 2021/22 season, with his last goal coming away at West Bromwich Albion in March 2021.
The player became Wolves’ record signing when he joined from previous club FC Porto, with super agent Jorge Mendes and his agency Gestifute’s close connection with the Wolves hierarchy playing a key role in making the move happen.
Now though the player is set to move to Brussels-based Anderlecht on a season-long long, according to a report in the .
Anderlecht finished third in Belgium last year, ten points behind champions Club Brugge and six off local rivals Union Saint-Gilloise. They were managed by former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, who left this summer in order to take over at relegated Burnley in the Championship.
Wolves impressed last season under new coach Bruno Lage, finishing tenth on 51 points, but only scored 38 goals across the course of the full campaign. Only three teams scored fewer, and all were relegated at the end of the season.
Silva’s temporary departure will leave them even lighter in attack and in need of reinforcements.
