Lukaku re-joined Inter Milan this summer for a season-long loan after his club-record £97.5m move to Chelsea in August last year ended in disaster, with the Belgium international striker scoring just eight Premier League goals in 2021-22.
Lukaku fell out with ex-boss Tuchel and upset some of the club’s fans when he gave an interview last December expressing regret over his return to Stamford Bridge.
But Tuchel was dismissed last month and was replaced by Potter, with .
Reports in Italy indicate that Inter Milan, who do not have a buy option, will look to loan the 29-year-old once again for the 2023-24 season – but Potter may want to keep him instead – with the player under contract until 2026.
‘It’s very difficult to see how he can salvage his Chelsea career at the moment,’ Johnson told about Lukaku’s future.
‘He’s obviously a good player but his recent spell at the club was dreadful, as we all know.
‘I think he can be a success if he can get back to doing what he does best and stop moving over to the flanks and trying to dribble past everyone.
‘That’s not his game. If you’re his manager then you want him to stay in the middle and not move because he’s not a footballer that can get into the gaps, get people on the half turn and bring others into play.
‘He’s just a brute that can score goals. If he sticks to what he’s good at then he can be a success at Stamford Bridge.’
