Graeme Souness has backed Chelsea, and Tottenham to make the quarter-finals of the , but is not so sure about his former club Liverpool.
Liverpool have been handed a very tough draw in , the side which beat them in the final of last season’s Champions League.
Chelsea take on Borussia Dortmund, Spurs play AC Milan and Manchester City meet RB Leipzig in the round of 16.
While Souness has no worries for three of the English sides, he feels Liverpool’s inconsistency this season could cost them against the Spanish giants.
After watching the Reds beat Tottenham on Sunday, he reckons the first half performance would be good enough to beat any side, but the second half would not.
‘I think , City and Tottenham will be fine. AC Milan are a shadow of what they were,’ Souness told .
‘For Liverpool it’s a name, it’s what that name conjures up. They seem to be be able, even when they’re not going well domestically, they can turn up in those games. They seem to have a way of winning.
‘It really depends what Liverpool will be playing. When I saw Liverpool in the first half yesterday, that’s as good as it gets, they were bang on it, fabulous.
‘You’d say they’d be happy to play anyone in this competition if that was their level of performance.
‘But in the second half they played second fiddle to a Tottenham team who upped the aggression stakes and they found it hard to live with.
‘So it really depends on what Liverpool turns up.’
