does not believe will be a success at , labelling the incoming signing as ‘stocking-filler’.

Werner is set to complete a shock return to the in the coming days after agreeing to join Spurs on loan from RB Leipzig until the end of the season.

The forward, best known to English fans for a disappointing two-year spell at Chelsea, .

, with Ange Postecoglou keen on more attacking depth, especially with captain and top scorer Son Heung-min away at the Asian Cup.

Having scored just two goals in 14 games this season for Leipzig, Werner will also be hoping he can revive his fortunes with a place in the Germany squad at Euro 2024 at stake.

But Souness isn’t convinced the move will work, though admitted Werner is occasionally capable of having a ‘purple patch’.

‘He needs five opportunities to score a goal, and he had one good season prior to coming here,’ the Liverpool legend told .

‘He found it difficult to get goals and I would say nothing’s changed, he’s gone back to Leipzig and this season played eight [Bundesliga] games and scored two goals.

‘He’s a stocking filler, he’s another body. I don’t think he’ll do very well, but having said that, he’s the kind of player that will get three or four chances every game because he’s rapid and gets himself in the right place.

‘He’s a player who one year could get 30 goals, and the next five or six, so he could have the most incredible purple patch and then Spurs will have to sign him.

‘[Liverpool forward Darwin] Nunez falls into that category where he needs too many chances to score a goal, but that may change as he’s a young man. Werner, I don’t see that changing, but he could have a purple patch.’

Werner scored 95 goals in 159 appearances for Leipzig prior to his £47.5m move to Stamford Bridge in 2020 where he would last just two seasons, scoring just 23 goals in 89 appearances.

Tottenham will be hoping they get the original Leipzig version of the German, who could end up making his club debut on Sunday against – ironically – Manchester United.
