Ten Hag has verbally agreed a four-year deal to become United’s new permanent manager at the end of the season – although no official announcement will be made before the Dutch Cup final on April 17, when Ajax are scheduled to face PSV Eindhoven.

A huge overhaul is expected at Old Trafford this summer. As many as 10 players expected to leave the club with Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard all nearing the end of their respective contracts.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s future remains uncertain while Dean Henderson, Eric Bailly, Anthony Martial, Phil Jones and Juan Mata facing possible exits.

United have identified Harry Kane and Benfica starlet Darwin Nunez as possible options up front this summer with Rice, Kalvin Phillips, Ruben Neves, Yves Bissouma and Aurelien Tchouameni among their options to strengthen in midfield.

However, according to the ten Hag’s hopes to rebuild the squad this summer could be limited by a meagre transfer budget.

The report claims United have informed agents that a failure to qualify for the Champions League could result in the budget being slashed to just £20million – placing almost all of those targets out of the reach of ten Hag.

United have won just one of their last five Premier League matches and have slipped to seventh in the table.

Tottenham’s improved run of form has seen them seize fourth place back from Arsenal, with the north London rivals now six and three points clear of United respectively.

United have seven games left to try and repair the damage but must still head to Anfield and The Emirates next week.
