And whilst a serious amount of coaching talent and hard work has gone into City’s work, it is also undeniable the club have spent vast amounts of money when it comes to acquiring some of the finest talents in the world.

Let’s take a look at how much have spent during Guardiola’s tenure in the Etihad hot seat.

How much money has Pep Guardiola spent at Manchester City?

Since becoming ’s manager in 2016, Guardiola has spent just over £1 billion on new players in the transfer market.

The single biggest outlay was the £100 million spent on from in 2021 – which at the time was the .

Some of the other biggest deals include Aymeric Laporte (£57m), Riyadh Mahrez (£60m), Rodri (£62m), Ruben Dias (£60m) and Erling Haaland (£52m).

Manchester City were for breaking financial fair play rules over 100 times between 2009 and 2018, although a final outcome is not expected for a while.

The investigation, which took four years, alleges that the club did not give a fair reflection of its revenue, sponsorship deals and operating costs.

What is Manchester City’s net spend under Pep Guardiola?

Despite the huge outlay, the club have been able to recoup a significant amount in player sales.

Raheem Sterling (£50m), Gabriel Jesus (£47m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£32m) all left the club in big money deals during the summer 2022 transfer window, whilst Leroy Sane and Ferran Torres have also departed in recent years.

As such, Manchester City’s net spend during Guardiola’s reign as manager is £478 million.

For comparison, Manchester United’s net spend during the same time period is a whopping £835 million.

In fact, City’s net spend over the last five years places them only tenth amongst Premier League teams.

As well as United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Newcastle and West Ham all have greater net spends since 2018.

City even made a profit in the summer 2022 transfer window despite big money moves for Haaland and Kalvin Phillips.

What has Pep Guardiola said about Manchester City’s spending?

Guardiola hasn’t shied away from the fact City have spent a mouthwatering amount of money since his arrival in Manchester – but has also stressed it isn’t all about the cash.

Guardiola said in February 2021: ‘We have a lot of money to buy a lot of incredible players.

‘There are many more things – first of all, an incredibly strong organisation, good, incredible, lovely people, the backroom staff, the staff and players especially but when you achieve what this club has achieved in four years, winning a lot of games, you need to have the top players.

‘You can win one title with average players, but to win a lot of titles you need top, top, top players. And top players cost a lot of money.’
