Former striker was shocked that Bruno Fernandes and not took a penalty during ’s defeat at Arsenal on Saturday.

The Gunners beat the Red Devils 3-1 at the Emirates, thanks to goals from Nuno Tavares, Bukayo Saka and Granit Xhaka, to move up to fourth in the table and boost their Champions League qualification hopes.

Ronaldo scored his 100th Premier League goal to bring the score to 2-1 and United were given the chance to equalise just before the hour mark when referee Craig Pawson pointed to the spot for a Tavares handball.

But it was not Ronaldo who stepped up to take the pen, but his club and country teammate Fernandes, who subsequently hit the post, much to the delight of Arsenal’s fans and players.

And Gunners legend Wright could simply not believe Fernandes was allowed to take the penalty, posting on Twitter: ‘Not letting Ronaldo take it???’ accompanied by a photo of Wright looking shocked.

Ronaldo has taken United’s last three spot kicks since Fernandes blazed one over the bar in the loss to Aston Villa at the start of the season, although the Portuguese striker did miss his most recent effort against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup in February.

Both players are renowned penalty experts but their future as United’s penalty takers must now be in question following these misses.

The loss means that the Red Devils’ top four aspirations look all but over, with the side now six points off Arsenal having played a game more than the Gunners.
