Graeme Souness can’t understand how could be set to allow Eddie Nketiah to leave the club on a free transfer in the summer.
Nketiah led the line in Arsenal’s 2-1 win over on Sunday afternoon as goals from Rob Holding and Gabriel boosted their top four hopes.
The young striker put in an impressive display which caught former Liverpool midfielder Souness’ eye but he can’t believe Arsenal have allowed his contract to run down.
‘Arsenal deserved to win the game, Arsenal were a good team today,’ Souness said on .
‘I thought the second half they found another yard, ok it was two defenders who got them the goals, but I still think they deserved to win the game.
‘Nketiah, I thought was the best player on the pitch today.
‘He was always threatening, he had a couple of shots where he came in on his right foot and made the goalkeeper work.
‘You always want him to run forward, stretch the defender. His contract is about to run out and I’m amazed at that, I really am.
‘He will not be short of teams wanting him. I really like him, I thought he was fabulous.’
Club chiefs have attempted to convince Nketiah to sign a new deal beyond the one that expires in the summer but so far the 22-year-old has refused and looks set to leave.
Nketiah was linked with a loan move to Crystal Palace in January but opted to stay at Arsenal and it remains to be seen where his future lies.
For now though the teenager is focused in ensuring Arsenal secure a return to Champions League football and with fifth-placed Tottenham also winning today, the Gunners sit fourth, two points clear of their rivals.
Both sides still need to play each other in the final four games of the season.
