Ex-England midfielder Danny Murphy admits he is baffled by ’s shock move for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya.
The Gunners have to provide cover and competition for Arsenal No. 1 .
Raya’s current deal with Brentford expires next summer and the club are keen to cash in during this transfer window as he has .
Brentford have slapped a £40m asking price on the 27-year-old, who has made 62 appearances and helped the Bees finish in the top-half of the table last season.
Murphy cannot understand Arsenal’s interest in Raya, however, and says a move to the Emirates Stadium also makes little sense for the Spaniard.
‘The Arsenal thing, I’m really struggling with that,’ Murphy told when asked about the speculation around Brentford shot-stopper Raya.
‘If you go and get him, what does it say to Aaron Ramsdale? Why do you need to pay £40m for a goalkeeper if you’re not going to start him?
‘And from the flip side, if you’re David Raya, your next move has to be to a club where you’ll be number one.
‘There’s no way he’s going to go somewhere and be happy with being the No. 2. The only way you get him in is if you say he’s starting.’
Arsenal have bolstered Mikel Arteta’s squad this summer with the signings of England midfielder Declan Rice, Netherlands defender Jurrien Timber and Germany star Kai Havertz.
The Gunners are looking to build on a promising season in which they finished second in the Premier League, five points behind treble-winners Manchester City.
