Former footballer Trevor Sinclair says need to sort out the structure of the club before they worry about bringing in a new manager.

United, who currently sit sixth in the Premier League, have endured a disappointing season which has left them fighting desperately for a spot.

Sinclair, who played for the likes of and , believes it’s not important who United appoint as their new boss in the summer if the club doesn’t have the right support around him.

Speaking on , he said: ‘It doesn’t matter what manager comes in to Manchester United next if they don’t get their eggs in a row properly and put the people in place that they need to.

‘Director of football, philosophy, recruitment, manager, and in that order. (Otherwise) they’re just going to end up with a mismatch of players. You look through the side, you’ve got Pogba who’s ready to go.

‘Sancho’s come in as a winger – can’t beat a player, not quick enough. You’ve got Varane, for me the jury’s still out on him. You’ve got Ronaldo, can’t press, so why are you bringing him into the football club in the first place?’

The signings of Raphael Varane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho last summer were supposed to kickstart a title challenge for United this season. However, a charge alongside Manchester City and Liverpool didn’t materialise.

In November, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked by the club after a run of dreadful results left the board with little option but to part ways with the Norwegian.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick replaced Solskjaer on a deal until the end of the season but has failed to turn United’s results around as they exited the Champions League at the round of 16 and went out early in both domestic cup competitions.

Ex-striker Wayne Rooney believes the current United team lack togetherness which the appointment of a permanent manager would bring.

Speaking on Sky Sports this week, he said: ‘It has been strange. If I’m being honest, I have been to a few of the games and it looks like a team of individuals.

‘If one makes a mistake, then it makes it more difficult for the team. They are going through a tough time at the club and the one thing that I want is for them to get the manager situation sorted as soon as possible.’

United’s next match is against Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday where they will look to take three points to keep the pressure on top-four rivals Arsenal and Tottenham.
