Ivan Toney has been charged by the Association over 232 alleged breaches of betting rules.

Brentford striker Toney and fresh reports indicate that the Red Devils could reignite their interest in January.

Toney has been in fantastic form for the Bees this season, registering 10 goals and two assists across 14 Premier League matches.

He scored twice on Saturday as Brentford stunned champions at the Etihad, including a 98th-minute winner.

The 26-year-old was unlucky to miss out on a place in England’s World Cup squad, with Gareth Southgate opting to take Callum Wilson to Qatar instead.

‘Ivan Toney has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of the FA’s betting rules,’ the FA said in a statement on Wednesday.

‘It is alleged that the Brentford FC forward breached FA rule E8 232 times between February 25, 2017 and January 23, 2021.

‘Ivan Toney has until Thursday, November 24 to provide a response.’

His club Brentford also posted a statement, which read: ‘Brentford FC has been informed that Ivan Toney has been charged with breaches of FA Rule E8.

‘The club has been in discussion with Ivan and his legal representatives about this matter and those conversations will continue privately.

‘We will make no further comment until the matter has been completed.’

Toney joined Brentford in 2020 from Peterborough United and has scored 58 goals in 105 games across all competitions.

He started his career with Northampton Town before joining Newcastle United, but found his opportunities limited and spent most of his time out on loan.

Toney will look to add to his 10 Premier League goals this term when Brentford get back to top-flight action on December 26 with a game against Tottenham.
