legend Jaap Stam thinks Harry Maguire can rediscover his best form at with the help of incoming manager Erik ten Hag.
United have endured a difficult campaign this season, their fifth without a trophy, with the club set to finish outside the top-four.
Much of the blame for their struggles has been laid at Maguire’s door with his performances at the back heavily criticised.
However, Stam thinks Maguire can turn his career at the Red Devils around despite rumours Ten Hag, who takes over in the summer, may be looking to replace the Englishman.
The 1999 Treble winner told PA: ‘I still think that Harry is a good player. He is a good defender.
‘You need to understand that every player – and I’ve had it myself – goes through rough spells that he’s having and hard times, the confidence is a bit low, he’s not feeling well and making mistakes. So when you cost £100m and you are making a mistake, yeah, the pressure on you is a lot more than when you’re costing a few quid.
‘He’s played this season good games as well. Having this season now and maybe a new coach coming in, having a fresh start, learning a lot from this season as well and what he’s done and what he needs to do.
‘Does he need to make a change or not? Maybe having different players next to him or in front of him can help him out as well in terms of feeling more confident, so maybe next season you’ll see a total different player.’
Since moving to Old Trafford from Leicester City for £85million in 2019, Maguire’s performances have gradually declined.
The defender started off well under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and was named captain shortly after his arrival before helping the club back into the Champions League.
However, this term, his form has dipped with the Manchester giants in sixth place in the Premier League having conceded 52 league goals so far, the worst defensive record in the current top top-nine.
To cap off a bad year, the 29-year-old was booed at Wembley by England fans in March and has battled speculation that Cristiano Ronaldo doubts his credentials as United’s captain.
