However, got his way and the board sanctioned a £30m offer for the midfielder, which has now been accepted.
With it, the Hammers are likely to drop their move for Scott McTominay.
The Red Devils rejected a £30m offer from West Ham on Monday, with United valuing him at closer to £45m.
However, West Ham are close to signing McTominay’s team-mate Maguire.
The 30-year-old was stripped of the captaincy earlier this summer and though he was not put up for sale, Ten Hag had made it clear Maguire was free to explore his options.
West Ham had a £30m bid accepted on Thursday morning and now must agree personal terms with Maguire.
The defender earns around £200,000-a-week at Old Trafford and will have to take a cut to move to the London Stadium.
The deal will help Ten Hag recoup some cash after his £170m outlay this summer.
United had budgeted for a spend of around £120m.
Anthony Elanga joined Nottingham Forest last month for £15m, in a move that reduces some of the outlay.
