Jamie Carragher slammed for his role in the concession the goal that set the tone for Arsenal’s chaotic performance against Southampton last night.

Needing a victory to get their title challenge back on track, Arsenal got off to the worst possible start allowing the struggling Saints to breach their defence inside the opening minute.

The blame fell squarely at the feet of goalkeeper Ramsdale, whose sloppy pass was intercepted by .

Southampton’s Argentine forward was allowed time and space to set himself for a shot that, although well directed, Carragher felt should have been saved.

He told Sky Sports: ‘It’s a mess from Aaron Ramsdale there’s no doubt about that. From the goalkeeper it’s really poor. He’s got to save it.

‘We said that before the game the Jarrod Bowen one against West Ham that made it 2-2.

‘Listen, he’s been praised to the hilt the last couple of weeks for his performance at Anfield. It’s fantastic from Alcaraz to get his shot off but he won’t expect to score with that and he shouldn’t score.

‘Ramsdale gets his right hand to it he’s got to be dealing with it he’s got to be stronger.’

, but their increasingly remote title hopes now rest on what would be an unlikely victory against Manchester City at the Etihad on Wednesday.

‘I don’t see the lack of confidence when a team is able to do that [what we did tonight],’ said Arteta when asked to explain his side’s fragility.

‘Normally the players start to hide in certain moments – I didn’t see a single player do that, they were willing to take risks, to take the initiative.

‘That’s why we created the chances we created, that’s why we got back to 3-3 from 3-1 and should have won the game.

‘So, the confidence is there, it’s those moments that we need to cut back. At this level, we cannot give away the goals that we have given. It’s as simple as that.’
