Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has backed Arsenal to battle for the Premier League title this term and says the Gunners can surprise those that have written them off.

Mikel Arteta’s side have made an emphatic start to the campaign by winning six of their first seven fixtures.

The signings of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus, as well as the integration of William Saliba into the starting XI, has given this Arsenal side a new look and they’re starting to reap the rewards of sticking with Arteta.

However, few are predicting a title challenge, with Arsenal’s focus on sealing a spot after six seasons outside the competition.

A top four finish would be good progress for the Gunners and it’s vital if Arteta is to continue the spending that he’s been granted across the last three summers.

But Carragher says that should be the least of the club’s ambitions and that instead the Gunners could challenge for the title.

‘If you actually watch Arsenal this season and the season before they do look like they could be title contenders,’ Carragher told TalkSPORT.

‘I’ve always been a huge fan of Mikel Arteta, really like how brave he’s been in blooding all these young players.

‘Now they’re 12 months older but the signing of Jesus and Saliba coming in at the back it almost feels like a completely changed whole aspect of Arsenal right now.

‘I think they could be a lot closer than people give them credit for.’
