Jamie Carragher believes the Anfield factor will see Liverpool beat Arsenal in this afternoon’s showdown.
The Gunners travel to the red half of Merseyside for one of the most anticipated matches of the season.
Mikel Arteta’s side can restore their eight-point lead at the top of the table with a win at Anfield but they haven’t beaten Liverpool away from home since 2012.
There’s 29 points between Liverpool and Arsenal this season but the Reds beat Manchester United 7-0 in their last home game and form often goes out the window when teams play at Anfield.
Carragher believes this afternoon’s game will be a huge test for the young players in Arsenal’s side and says Liverpool will come out on top.
‘I think Liverpool will win. Just because it’s Anfield,’ Carragher told Sky Sports.
‘If this game was taking place at any other place, if it was Arsenal or a mutual venue then Arsenal would be massive favourites. But when you look at Liverpool this season and you watch some of the poor performances we’ve seen in the last two matches against City and , when they come here [Anfield] it’s a completely different team.
‘That’s not something I’m proud of. Judging a team phyiscally, mentally, how tough they are…I always look at their away form. That’s not something you could throw at this Liverpool team over the last five or six years.
‘But in terms of Arsenal there’s a great steel about them, they’re the best team away from home in the league but I could never go against Liverpool playing at Anfield.
‘It’s that factor of the crowd and there are still young players in that Arsenal team and it will be interesting to see how they go if they go behind. have been one of the best teams in the division this season and they lost 7-0. This place can do strange things to teams.’
