Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip could be sidelined for months in a key injury blow for Liverpool, manager has confirmed.
Matip picked up a knee injury in Liverpool’s 4-3 victory over Fulham on Sunday and is awaiting the results of a scan.
The 32-year-old had been in impressive form for the Reds and news of his extended absence causes more problems for a Liverpool defence already without until the new year, while goalkeeper Alisson is also injured.
, he provided a more ominous update on Matip when asked if the Cameroonian was facing several months on the sidelines.
‘When the doctor comes in and says: ‘It doesn’t look great’ … but we have to wait for the scans and the scan isn’t here yet,’ Klopp said.
‘You can imagine it doesn’t look great. It is never good news [when a doctor says that immediately].
‘I’ve never had that in all my years where someone says: ‘Oh my God, it’s completely wrong and there’s nothing wrong, he can play tomorrow.’ It doesn’t happen.’
Liverpool face a trip to Sheffield United in the Premier League on Wednesday night, looking to keep pace with leaders Arsenal.
Klopp’s side currently sit second, five points behind the Gunners with a game in hand.
Many have tipped Liverpool to challenge Arsenal and Manchester City for this season’s Premier League trophy but Klopp has played down talk over the title race, insisting he has ‘no clue’ where his side will be in April.
