Liverpool legend John Barnes believes that ex- player Marc Guehi would be a ‘great signing’ for either Arsenal or .

Guehi has had another great season for and has firmly established himself as one of the best centre-backs outside of the ’s top teams.

The 22-year-old traded Stamford Bridge for Selhurst Park in 2021 having never made a senior appearance for his boyhood club but has only gone from strength to strength.

Many have taken notice of his performances, with Gareth Southgate calling him up numerous times for England, and just this week .

This comes amid concerns that William Saliba’s back injury could keep the defender out for a long-time, but if they want him they’ll face competition from arch-rivals Spurs, while Chelsea also have a first-refusal clause in his contract which becomes active in the summer.

And Barnes thinks that signing Guehi would be a wise move for the north London clubs, telling : ‘Marc Guehi would be a great signing for Arsenal and Tottenham.

‘He’s been knocking on the door of the England side for a few years now. He’s English, he’s young with good technical ability on the ball and he’s quick so he’s a modern centre back.

‘He’s decent enough in the air to cope and he’s got a great attitude from what I’m led to believe. He’s a good character around the dressing room.’

Of course, this all depends on whether Palace would be willing to let their star defender go and that seems unlikely right now, even if a ludicrous offer was made.

They bought Guehi for £18million and he still has three-years left to run on his contract, but more importantly for the Eagles he has been earmarked as they future captain, having regularly worn the armband this season.

Furthermore, current club captain Luka Milivojevic and his vices James McArthur and Joel Ward are out of contract in the summer, as is talisman Wilfried Zaha who has been handed the armband in recent games by the returning Roy Hodgson.

Tottenham will get a chance to see Guehi in action first-hand on Saturday when they host Palace in a game that they must win to keep any hope of finishing in the top four.
