is reportedly a top target for his former boss as he looks to strengthen Roma’s backline in January.
Mourinho is on the hunt for defensive reinforcements due to Chris Smalling’s continuing injury issues, which have limited the former star to just three appearances so far this season.
Due to the club’s finances, Roma are unlikely to break the bank for a new centre-back when the transfer window opens, so cheaper options like Genoa‘s Radu Dragusin and Red Bull Salzburg’s Oumar Solet are being explored.
And according to Corriere dello Sport, via , Spurs outcast Dier is also among the Portuguese manager’s top picks, having worked with the England international during his tumultuous two-years in North London.
Once a key member of Spurs’ side, the 29-year-old is yet to make an appearance under Ange Postecoglou, and with Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and even left-back Ben Davies ahead of him in the pecking order, it is clear .
Dier’s contract expires next summer, so he would be available for a very small fee come January, and he would likely be up for a move to secure regular minutes and keep his faint hopes of making England’s Euro 2024 squad.
This is not the first time Mourinho has wanted to sign the player however, with the ‘Special One’ desperate to acquire Dier during his time in charge at Old Trafford.
At the time, he was one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League, but Spurs held their ground and refused to sell, leading to United signing Nemanja Matic from Chelsea instead.
By the time Mourinho arrived in North London in 2019, Dier was being repurposed as a centre-back and would go onto play 57 times under the manager before his sacking in 2021.
Overall, Dier has made 360 appearances for Tottenham since moving from Sporting Lisbon in 2014, helping he club reach the Champions League final and two League Cup finals.
He also has 49 caps for the Three Lions and was part of the squad for Euro 2016 and the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
