‘There is some football stuff we have to do and sort, but that’s normal. Pre-season always goes until the first international break, we have to use these weeks without international football.

‘In we could train a lot on physical and tactical stuff, we came out of the tour without big problems. It’s not done and dusted, we have four or five sessions then we have to put in a proper fight. Let’s go.’

Klopp was also buoyed by the performance of Alexis Mac Allister, who impressed in a deeper role at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield against Darmstadt.

‘He’s a top-class player with and without the ball,’ Klopp said.

‘We had our moments where we were too open, we will work on it, we will test some things.

‘In a compact formation, Alexis can play there, if it’s open should he play there? No. But he showed he is a brilliant footballer and did really well.’
