has hit back at fans who ridiculed him for his woeful performance in the MLS All-Star Skills Challenge.
Eyebrows were raised when Mikel Arteta sanctioned the £65million signing of a player who had largely underwhelmed during three tumultuous years at Stamford Bridge.
Arsenal fans got their first glimpse of Havertz in an Arsenal shit last week in a 1-1 friendly draw against Nurnberg before he took part in the skills challenge on Tuesday night.
which led to fans of his old club mocking him on .
The 24-year-old gave a more accurate indication of his potential during last night’s crushing 5-0 win over MLS All-Stars, scoring his first goal, ironically, with a volley.
Havertz referenced the derision he attracted with a pointed message on Twitter before reflecting on his goal in a more measured fashion on Instagram, saying: ‘Really nice feeling to get my first Arsenal. Tahnk you to the fans for the amazing support this week!’
Arteta, meanwhile, gave a further indication as to the reasoning behind his decision to sign Havertz and the way in which he intends to use him.
He said: I think, again, (versatility) it’s one of the main qualities he has.
‘He gives us something very different with his quality and size as well, when you have to beat the press for example and use him as a target man.
So, we will see – for now, he’s playing in the attacking midfield position, but I’m sure throughout the season and throughout games as well, we’re going to have the options to play him in different positions.’
