Lauren James turned in an incredible, record-breaking performance in 6-1 win over China at the , but promises that she will continue to improve.

The 21-year-old scored twice and provided three assists as she became the first England player to be

It could have been even more as she had a brilliant controversially disallowed for offside by VAR just before half-time, denying her a hat-trick.

She described the decision as ‘a bit frustrating’ but will not be letting it bother her, with the Lionesses cruising into the last 16 where they will meet Nigeria, going into the knockout stages with three wins from three games and just one goal conceded.

‘Again another day that obviously is what dreams are made of,’ the Chelsea star told ITV. ‘Happy for the team, everyone’s buzzing and we’re looking forward to going into the next round.’

Playing in the number 10 role in a 3-5-2 system was a different position for James, but she relished it and was deadly either striking at goal herself or playing in her teammates.

‘I felt free,’ she said. ‘Whether I’m on the wing or in the middle I’m happy to be on the pitch playing and enjoying my football, I’m happy that I can contribute to goals as well.’

James has cemented her place in the starting XI with the performance on Tuesday afternoon and is attracting a lot of attention for her displays, having also scored the only goal of the game against Denmark last time out as well.

Asked whether she can keep improving, she said: ‘Yeah for sure. Each day, each game I’m looking to improve and get better. There’s many more years of improvement, I can always get better.

‘I just need to stay focused and hope that can happen.’

England boss Sarina Wiegman was understandably thrilled with James, saying: ‘She feels good, you can tell, she did special things today unfortunately that one goal was cancelled, but she flows over the pitch.’

Up next for the Lionesses will be Nigeria on 7 August in Brisbane, which James is expecting to be a difficult challenge.

‘Very tough, every team’s been tough,’ she said. ‘Teams are catching up with each other and I know that will be another difficult game.’
