Liverpool will win the 2022-23 Premier League title, according to former defender Nedum Onuoha.

’s side missed out on last season’s title by a single point as City recovered from 2-0 down to beat 3-2 on the final day of 2021-22.

City were more dominant in 2020-21 as Liverpool finished third, but the 2019-20 title race was also decided by a single point as the Reds finished as champions.

That was Liverpool’s first top-flight title in 30 years and first under Klopp, who has also led the side to glory in the , FA Cup and League Cup.

But he is desperate to register his second Premier League trophy and Liverpool showed their credentials in a dominant 3-1 win over City in the Community Shield on Saturday.

City have been busy in the summer transfer market as big name players have come and gone, with Erling Haaland and Kalvin Phillips arriving from Borussia Dortmund and Leeds United while Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus have left.

It has been a more stable window for Liverpool, who did lose Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich although Darwin Nunez arrived for £85m from Benfica.

‘Liverpool and Manchester City are by far the two sides closest to winning it,’ Onuoha told when talking about the new Premier League season.

‘But it’s always a toss up, it’s by a point. [New] players have come into City and [some] have left, whereas on Saturday it was the same old Liverpool.

‘City are looking for something different, perhaps it means in the league they won’t hit the ground running in the way they need to be competitive [for the title] throughout.

‘But it’s a toss up and neither would be a surprise. City fans won’t expect Erling Haaland to be at his best in his first season.

‘He will score goals, but I’m leaning towards Harry Kane [for top scorer].’

Liverpool’s season gets started on August 6 when they travel to Fulham while City face a trip to West Ham the following day.
