Levi Colwill has made it clear he wants to be part of the first-team squad at next season, but is prepared to leave the club if he is not part of ’s plans.

The 19-year-old has enjoyed an excellent campaign on loan with Huddersfield, making 30 appearances in the Championship, and will be part of the Terriers’ squad for Sunday’s Play-Off clash against Nottingham Forest.

If Huddersfield win promotion to the Premier League, a second season on loan at the John Smith’s Stadium could be massively beneficial for the teenager.

But Chelsea are in need of defensive reinforcements themselves, with the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen leaving them short at the back, and Colwill is being considered for a role in the first-team squad next season.

The academy graduate is keen to try and make the grade at his parent club, but he has also underlined the need to think about his career and would be open to leaving Chelsea if it is in the best interests of his development.

‘For me, playing for Chelsea will always be the main aim right now because it’s my club,’ he explained.

‘But if that doesn’t happen, well then I have to find other ways to progress and become the player I want to be.’

Colwill has been linked with clubs such as Arsenal and Leicester should Chelsea decide to cash in on another young, up-and-coming player – just as they did with Marc Guehi and Fikayo Tomori – but the centre-back would not be opposed to staying at Huddersfield.

‘There’s too much respect for me to close the door,’ said Colwill of a potential return to the Terriers.

‘We need to get promotion first, which is the only thing I’m thinking of right now.

‘I’m not planning for next year, all I can focus on right now is Wembley on Sunday and then the internationals after that.

‘After when I’ve finished all of that, well that’s when I’ll start thinking about that.’
