Lucas Torreira has questioned which number he will wear next season after discovering Gabriel Martinelli has been given a promotion.
launched their new home kit on Thursday and, with it, confirmed that Brazilian forward Martinelli has been handed the No.11 shirt which was still associated with his fellow South American.
Torreira featured prominently during the early stages of Mikel Arteta’s reign but an ankle injury suffered just prior to the initial wave of the Covid pandemic represented a huge setback in his Arsenal career.
The Uruguay international was subsequently sent on loan to Ateltico Madrid with moving in the opposite direction following a £45million transfer.
Torreira played a bit-part role in the Spanish side’s La Liga title-winning campaign but failed to win over Diego Simeone and joined Fiorentina on loan last summer where he has kickstarted his career.
The 26-year-old is likely to complete a permanent move to the Viola but he was still seemingly taken aback after learning his shirt number had gone to Martinelli.
He wrote on Instagram: ‘What number will I wear next year? Good luck amigo, love you.’
Martinelli and Arsenal, meanwhile, finish their Premier League campaign against Everton at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
The Gunners need a miracle in order to qualify for next season’s Champions League and will be relying on already relegated Norwich doing them a favour against Tottenham.
‘Well now we have to swallow everything, digest it and tomorrow is another day,’ said Arteta when asked to assess the chances of sneaking into fourth place.
‘We will still have five days to prepare that match. We know what we have to do. There’s not a lot of words I think that are needed after the performance tonight.’
