Lyon manager Fabio Grosso was left bleeding from the head after Marseille fans attacked his team’s bus on the way to a Ligue 1 match on Sunday evening.

Rocks were thrown at the Lyon team bus, smashing windows and Grosso was cut by shards of glass as a result.

The was seen bandaged and walking shortly afterwards but it was a significant cut that he suffered above his left eye.

Meetings were held at the Stade Velodrome after the incident to decide whether the game would go ahead and it was later confirmed that the match would be postponed.

Lyon owner John Textor said: ‘We have a coach [Fabio Grosso] who has blood coming out of his head. He has pieces of glass stuck in his head. We support the decision of the referee [to abandon the game].’

Marseille president Pablo Longoria said: ‘These are completely unacceptable circumstances.

‘My first thought is for Fabio Grosso, someone I respect and have known for a long time. I went to see him as soon as I arrived at the stadium, I saw how he was.’

Lyon were travelling to Marseille looking for their first league win of the season, having gone without a victory in their first nine Ligue 1 matches.

Defeat at home to Clermont last time out left them at the foot of the table and in desperate need to turn their form around.

A statement from Ligue 1 read: ‘During the crisis unit meeting following the incidents that occurred outside the Vélodrome stadium on the route of its bus, Olympique Lyonnais made known its opposition to taking part in the meeting given the circumstances.

‘In consultation with Olympique de Marseille and the public authorities, the OM-OL meeting will therefore not be played this Sunday evening at 8:45 p.m.

‘It will now be up to the Competitions Commission to decide on the fate of this meeting by application of article 544 of the competition regulations.’
