United are scouring the market for an emergency left-back following injury to Luke Shaw.
The Englishman is set to be sidelined for two months with a muscular injury, and Tyrell Malacia is already injured.
United have opened talks over a number of different deals, with Sergio Reguillon, Marc Curcurella and Marcos Alonso under consideration.
However, Tagliafico has been touted as a potential solution.
The Argentine worked under Ten Hag at Ajax and left for Lyon in the same summer the Dutchman departed for Old Trafford.
The defender made 41 appearances in an impressive debut campaign for the Ligue 1 club, and they had no intention of parting with the defender.
But, after holding talks with United over a loan deal, Le Parisien say Lyon have made it clear they will not entertain a season-long deal.
Instead, the French outfit want United to include an obligation to buy clause, which would see Tagliafico move to Old Trafford on a permanent basis in 2024.
