Lyon star says Chelsea are a ‘very big club’ and he was persuaded to join the Blues over because of the ‘project’ at Stamford Bridge.

The right-back completed his move to the Blues last weekend, after Chelsea agreed to Lyon’s demand that the defender remains at the club for the remainder of the season.

The move, worth an initial £30.7m with £4.5m in add-ons, will give Chelsea competition for first choice right-back Reece James.

Gusto, 19, was on the radar of a host of top European clubs but Chelsea struck quickly this month to secure his signature.

After being alerted to Chelsea’s move for Gusto, Manchester United made contact with the defender’s representatives.

The Red Devils had identified Gusto as a replacement for Aaron Wan-Bissaka but they had plotted to make a move this summer.

They therefore asked Gusto to delay a decision on his future until the end of the season.

But Gusto was keen on joining Chelsea now and the teenager says the ‘project’ at Stamford Bridge convinced him to join.

‘I chose because it’s a very big club and I very much like the project,’ said Gusto.

‘I like this city so I’m really, really happy to come here. Thank you for your messages. See you soon!’

Chelsea have spent £200m this month, having splurged close to £300m last summer.

The Blues’ spending isn’t finished this month though, with Graham Potter still keen to sign Enzo Fernandez from Benfica.

However, the Portuguese club will only let Fernandez go if Chelsea activate his £107m release clause.
