Man City too strong for Chelsea but Arsenal and Spurs in shock Carabao Cup elimination

Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez both struck in the second half as saw off 2-0 last night to book their place in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup.

Chelsea teenager Lewis Hall had a golden chance from close range just before half-time but shot straight at the legs of City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.

City’s recent record in the has been prolific, with six triumphs in 11 seasons, and they will fancy their chances again this time round.

City stepped it up a gear after the break and a deflected shot was well saved low down by Edouard Mendy.

The hosts struck eight minutes into the half, as Mahrez’s floated free-kick evaded the Chelsea wall and flew into the net.

Soon after it was 2-0, with Alvarez finding Mahrez with a lovely pass. Mahrez fired in a low shot, that was palmed by Mendy straight into the path of Alvarez to slot home.

Derby acquitted themselves extremely well against Liverpool at Anfield. Layton Stewart, making his debut for the Reds, shot over the crossbar from Fabio Carvalho’s fine cross.

Joe Wildsmith saved superbly late on from LIverpool’s Harvey Elliott as the tie finished 0-0 and went to penalties.

Both north London giants, Arsenal and Tottenham, were knocked out. The Gunners were beaten 3-1 at home by Brighton, with Danny Welbeck, Kaoru Mitoma and Tariq Lamptey scoring for the Seagulls.

Renan Lodi and Jesse LIngard scored in the second half for Nottingham Forest as they beat Spurs 2-0 at the City Ground.
