‘I think Donny has to play,’ Ten Hag said on Friday. ‘In games he was in the squad, so then he had the opportunity, but it was a slow start in the season because he still recovered from physical setbacks.
‘But now he is back and is doing well in the training so, if we can’t give him perspective, I can see that he has to play, for his career, for everything.’
Van de Beek, speaking about his own future last week, said: ‘I need to play on regular basis… if not at Man United, it will be at another club.
‘It’s a healthy ambition. I’m absolutely crazy about football. I make a good living at Man United, but money has never been my motivation.’
Van de Beek joined United for £34.6m plus £4.4m in add-ons from Ajax in 2020 but he has largely struggled, with just two goals and two assists in 62 games.
