Former defender Patrice Evra says should never have left Inter Milan to re-join .
Lukaku, who moved to Stamford Bridge last summer in a deal worth just short of £100million, has struggled to make an impression in west London and continues to play second fiddle to the likes of .
Evra, the former Manchester United left-back, believes Lukaku made a mistake in joining the Blues and was better off at Inter where he was scoring bags of goals.
Speaking to Prime Video, he said: ‘People who criticise him have a short memory. Because when he arrived in London he scored and did well; then he got injured and said he missed Inter.
‘In the end, he created a bit of a mess with the (Chelsea) fans. He wanted to return to Chelsea at all costs, he should have stayed at Inter after such a high-level season.
‘He made that choice there which for me is wrong.’
Lukaku was signed by Thomas Tuchel on the back of his ruthless finishing in Serie A last year.
In 36 appearances for Inter, the Belgian scored 24 league goals as he lifted Italy’s top-flight crown. However, in his second spell at Chelsea, he has netted only five league goals so far.
Earlier this year, Lukaku caused controversy when he revealed to Sky Italy that he never wanted to leave Inter.
He said: ‘I told myself that there is only one team where I could possibly see myself – Chelsea.
‘I wasn’t thinking about going there, but at one point they came in for me and so I asked (Inter boss Simone) Inzaghi to leave.
‘The fact that they didn’t try to make me sign a new contract bothered me a bit, it hurt me even. If Inter offered me a new contract, I would have stayed 100 per cent. That goes without saying.’
Lukaku, 28, has been heavily linked with a return to Inter this summer.
