Peter Schmeichel has questioned ’s decision to invest so heavily in and fears the star could struggle in the Premier League.

United have agreed a deal in principle with the Spanish champions and will pay around £60million for the 30-year-old who arrived in Manchester on Friday ahead of his medical.

The Brazil international arrives at Old Trafford with an almost unrivalled pedigree having played a pivotal role in Real’s recent domination of the , a competition they have won five times in the last eight years.

Schmeichel, however, fears the holding midfielder is incompatible with the demands of Erik ten Hag and United would have been bettered off recruiting a player with expierence of English top flight football.

He told the BBC: ‘I’m surprised, I have to be honest because Casemiro hasn’t been mentioned at all the way through the transfer window.

‘At no point was that name mentioned. I think he’s been absolutely fantastic for Real Madrid, I’ve been impressed with how well he’s played.

‘He had an injury and came back and really really tighten up the back. What he did at Real Madrid was sit in front of the back four and just give them protection. They had Toni Kroos and Luka Modric to give the ball to.

‘If you play No.6 for Manchester United you will be expected to drive forward with the ball as well and take part in the game.

‘What Ten Hag says is wants to be in posession of the ball, control the game and wants to put pressure on the ball all the time.

‘That’s a big difference from La Liga and even from the Champions League and playing in the Premier League every week.

‘I’m surprised we’ve signed this player at that amount of money at that age when we don’t know he can do the job this is what I said about taking a step back and sign someone we know who can play in the Premier League.’
