Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has hinted that he will return to Old Trafford this summer following an unsuccessful loan spell at Sevilla.

Martial, 26, joined the Spanish side on a six-month deal back in January after he was granted an exit by interim manager following a lack of game time at United.

However, his move to Sevilla hasn’t worked out as expected, with the Frenchman scoring just one goal in ten matches. As a result, Martial believes a longer stay in Spain is hard to imagine.

Speaking to ABC Sevilla, he said: ‘I see it very complicated to be able to continue at Sevilla. I’m not worried about that right now. I came knowing that it would be six months and then I would surely have to return to .

‘I’m very happy with the experience of playing in a new club, as big as Sevilla and having minutes again. If we manage to be a top four team, we will have achieved the goal and I will be happy for the fans, who have been very good to me since I arrived.’

Since Martial was signed by Louis van Gaal in 2015 for £58million, the striker has flattered to deceive at Old Trafford.

A strong start to his United career saw him score 11 Premier League goals in his first season – including one on his debut against Liverpool in a 3-1 win – but a drop-off in form meant he became a bit-part player throughout Jose Mourinho’s time in charge, scoring only four league goals in the 2016-17 campaign.

Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the former Monaco man found himself back as a regular starter and, after being moved from the left-wing, was playing as the club’s main centre-forward in 2020 as he scored 17 league goals.

However, the signings of Edinson Cavani later that year and Cristiano Ronaldo last summer signalled the end of Martial’s time leading the Red Devils’ attack as he fell out of favour at United, making just eight league appearances.

A loan move to Sevilla in January was supposed to re-launch his career but a revival has not materialised.

Martial still has another two years remaining on his current contract at United and it remains to be seen if he is to be included in the plans of incoming manager Erik ten Hag.
