But according to , it’s Chelsea and Manchester United who are the two Premier League clubs that are frontrunners to sign the Uruguay international this summer.
The report also claims that Paris Saint-Germain also hold a strong interest in Nunez, while Benfica are open to selling the striker for €70 million (£58.2m).
Nunez has scored 29 goals in all competitions for Benfica this season, while he scored a hat-trick in Benfica’s win over Belenenses at the weekend.
The Uruguay international also scored Benfica’s goal in their 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League quarter final last week.
And speaking ahead of the return leg, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp backed Nunez to have a ‘big career’.
‘Extremely good looking boy and a decent player. Really, really good player I have to say,’ said Klopp.
‘I knew him before of course but he played pretty much in front of me with tough battles with Ibou Konate. Strong, quick, looked calm with his finish.
‘Good, really good. Like I say in these situations, if he stays healthy, he has a big career ahead of him.’
