’s board have told that he must continue to play the club’s strongest team to ensure they qualify for European football next season.
Following their embarrassing 1-0 defeat to last Saturday, United are currently seventh in the Premier League, six points off Tottenham Hotspur who occupy the coveted last spot, with just seven games remaining.
With Arsenal and West Ham United also ahead of them, the club’s chances of qualifying for Europe’s top competition are becoming increasingly unlikely and they look set to compete in either the Europa League or the Europa Conference League instead.
However, there is a possibility that they may not happen either, with Wolverhampton Wanderers only two points behind the Red Devils in the league, while finishing seventh may not be enough all together if Crystal Palace triumph in the FA Cup.
Matters would be further complicated if West Ham win the Europa League or Leicester City win the inaugural Europa Conference League
With all these factors in mind, have reported that United’s chiefs are growing anxious about what missing out on European football would mean for the club, both financially as well as how it would affect transfers and the appointment of their new manager, with Ajax’s Erik ten Hag now very much the frontrunner for the job.
As a result, they have informed interim-manager Rangnick that he must do all in his power to get United to finish as high as possible and that means playing the strongest possible players for every remaining game of the season.
Rangnick reportedly wanted to use these games to give opportunities to young players and hand debuts to academy prospects but in light of the worrying situation, he has been informed that this is no longer feasible.
Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, United have failed to consistently qualify for the Champions League, even failing to play any European football in the 2014/15 season, and this has cost the club hundreds of millions in revenue.
In order to continue avoiding that fate, Rangnick and United will have to navigate their tricky remaining fixtures which include journeys to Liverpool and Arsenal as well as a clash with Chelsea at Old Trafford.
