Manchester United have been hit with an FA charge for failing to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during their clash with at Stamford Bridge last Saturday.

The incident occurred in the 84th minute after referee Stuart Attwell awarded a penalty to the home side for United’s Scott McTominay grabbing Armando Broja.

The Red Devils players were furious with the decision, with the scoreline goalless at the time, and surrounded Attwell, with the likes of McTominay, Luke Shaw, Fred, Lisandro Martinez and Bruno Fernandes involved in the haranguing of the official.

As a result, the Association has charged the club, with United having until Friday this week to respond.

An FA statement read: ‘ FC has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E20.1 after its fixture versus Chelsea FC on Saturday 22 October 2022 in the Premier League.

‘Manchester United FC allegedly failed to ensure that its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion in the 84th minute, and the club has until Friday 28 October 2022 to provide a response.’

Jorginho would eventually score the penalty which Attwell gave against McTominay, but it was not too late for United to rescue a point as Casemiro scored in the 94th minute to pinch a draw.

That kept United just one point and one place behind Chelsea with the Blues in fifth.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag said: ‘I think it was a good game. In the first half, we dominated the game. But also, that is why the opponent switched their system. And they made it a little more difficult for us, like we saw in the last minutes of the first half. In the second half, I think it was even. It was a battle between two teams of the same height. And in the end, I think a point was justified.

‘It was deserved. It was tough, when you get so short for time, you get 1-0 down, I think it is really difficult after the fourth game in 10 days to fight back. But the team found their energy and their strength and fought back. And that’s really big for this team.’
