Ten Hag is eager for the club to bring in another midfielder, although United’s attempts to prise Frenkie de Jong away from Barcelona are now unlikely to succeed.

A versatile forward, a right-back and a back-up goalkeeper are also on the club’s transfer list.

United saw an €80m bid for Ajax star Antony rejected by the Dutch giants on Wednesday.
