have cooled contract talks with and are instead preparing to trigger a 12-month extension clause in his deal.

The defender had been deemed surplus to requirements by when he first joined the club.

Ten Hag settled on as his first choice right-back and it wasn’t until December 2022 that Wan-Bissaka, who had struggled with injury, made his first appearance under the Dutchman.

United had lined up a deal for Netherlands ace Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen but Wan-Bissaka’s form in the second half of the season convinced Ten Hag to keep the defender.

The former Crystal Palace ace showed improvement on the ball, while there’s no denying his defensive capabilities.

Ten Hag therefore signed off a new deal for the defender, with Wan-Bissaka’s existing deal set to expire in 2024.

But, after opening talks, negotiations between the two parties have stopped.

United are instead preparing to trigger a 12-month extension clause in the defender’s deal that will keep him at the club until 2025.

It’s a strange move given Wan-Bissaka’s willingness to sign a new deal, and could point to uncertainty over Ten Hag’s future at the club.
