Karim Adeyemi has rejected the chance to join in favour of Dortmund, despite the Red Devils’ bettering the Germans’ salary offer with wages of around £150,000-a-week.

United plan on signing at least one striker this summer, with Edinson Cavani set to leave the club at the end of his contract.

Anthony Martial could also leave following his loan spell at Sevilla as the Frenchman does not appear a suitable fit for how Erik ten Hag wants to play at Old Trafford.

Ralf Rangnick is well aware of the 20-year-old’s potential given his knowledge and contacts of the Red Bull franchise and it’s claimed he has recommended the striker to United.

However, German reporter says United were too late to a deal for Adeyemi and the striker will join Dortmund in a five-year deal instead.

That’s despite United bettering Dortmund’s salary offer, with Adeyemi rejecting wages of £150,000-a-week at the Theatre of Dreams in order to move to Germany.

Adeyemi’s move to Dortmund is set to be completed in the coming weeks and Salzburg value the forward at around £32m. He is expected to replace Erling Haaland, who is closing in on an agreement with Manchester City.

Rangnick admitted last week that United need forwards this summer.

The German says the club should be targeting at least two ‘modern’ strikers to play with Ronaldo.

‘Cristiano isn’t a central striker or does not want to play in that position,’ Rangnick said.

‘It’s obvious the club needs at least two new strikers who give this team more quality and more options. I wouldn’t even call it wingers.

‘Two strikers and modern strikers, that do not necessarily have to be wingers. If you look into international football, there aren’t many top teams who still play with two strikers. Most play with either three strikers or a false nine.”

‘If you look at Liverpool and … they have in their squad five or six top-class strikers.

‘Gabriel Jesus, until four weeks ago, hardly played (for City). Now he’s playing again regularly. You look at the number of players they have and if you ask me is he playing as central striker or winger? Is a winger or striker?

‘They’re all strikers and can play in different positions. They can also switch, they can rotate. Those kinds of players, we don’t have that many.’
