Manchester United send message tov Ruud van Nistelrooy after former striker is named new PSV Eindhoven manager

Ruud van Nistelrooy will become the new PSV Eindhoven manager from next season with the great ready to take the next step in his career.

PSV confirmed on Wednesday night the former Netherlands international will take over from Roger Schmidt this summer. The striker has risen through the ranks at the Eredivisie club, managing various youth teams since retiring as a player in 2012.

Van Nistelrooy has recently been linked with a return to United with naming him as a possible coaching option to work alongside Erik ten Hag should the boss take over at Old Trafford this summer.

His ambitions have for some time been on taking the lead at PSV, however.

‘A few things have come together the past few months,’ Van Nistelrooy said in a PSV statement.

‘The appointment of Marcel Brand as PSV’s general manager and the conversation we’ve had were the final push I needed to make a conscious choice and take this step.

‘PSV are ready to embark on a new path this summer and I am ready to play my part.

‘Talks with the board of directors have reinforced the idea that we are ambitious and look to create something special in the long term. I am excited for the task in hand at PSV.’

United have also paid tribute to the man who scored 150 goals in 219 games for the club between 2001 and 2006.

‘Good luck with your first managerial role, Ruud. Everybody at Manchester United wishes you well.’
