believes need to take a leaf out of Liverpool’s recruitment book this summer, saying that not being in the Champions League does not mean they cannot buy the players they need to improve.

The Red Devils will not be playing in the Champions League next season, which Rangnick admits makes their summer recruitment drive more difficult than if they were dining at Europe’s top table.

When new manager Erik ten Hag arrives, the club will begin a significant rebuild, with plenty of players expecting to arrive as the Dutchman completely revamps the squad.

Rangnick has looked back to Jurgen Klopp arriving at Liverpool in 2015 and finishing eighth in his first season.

Despite being well outside the Champions League spots, Liverpool signed Sadio Mane from Southampton that summer and the Senegalese forward has already established himself as a club legend and a bargain at £30m.

Klopp also brought in the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum and Joel Matip that summer, who have both had big impacts at the club, so the right signings can be made despite the lack of European action.

‘It would be easier if we play , but when came to Liverpool, in his first season he finished eighth and they didn’t play in any European competition as far as I remember,’ Rangnick told Sky Sports.

‘But still managed to bring in players like and quite a few others, so it’s possible.

‘There are enough reasons for players who want to develop their careers – and this is an important issue – players for who it is the next, best logical step in their careers.

‘Not only for financial reasons, for those players it should be the best possible step, because then that will mean they come for the very right reasons to this club.’

Rangnick was brutally honest about the recruitment job needed at Old Trafford, saying last month that there could need to be 10 new signings to sort the team out.

‘If you analyse the situation, it’s not that difficult to analyse,’ he said. ‘The team needs a rebuild, not because some players have to go but quite a few have no contracts anymore, their contracts are expiring, then for me it’s clear there will be six, seven, eight, maybe 10 new players.

‘And before you sign those players you need to be aware how do you want to play? What kind of football does the new manager want to play? And then take it from there and then bring every single player fitting into that kind of profile.’
