are set to submit an opening offer of around £47million in a bid sign Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund.
The Red Devils expect to complete a £43.9m deal for in the next 24 hours, with the Cameroonian due in the north-west tonight ahead of undergoingamedical on Wednesday.
Onana’s arrival will take United’s spending past the £100m mark following the £55m acquisition of from .
Once the 27-year-old is through the door, Erik ten Hag can switch his attention to signing a striker and Hojlund is the Dutchman’s first choice.
The 20-year-old is widely considered one of the most exciting talents in the world and his game has gone from strength to strength during his 18 months with Atalanta, who he joined for a fee of around £17m.
United have already held exploratory talks with Atalanta in the last month but have stopped short of submitting a bid.
Instead, United have been focused on talking the Italians down from their £86m asking price, which they’ve attempted to do by offering players such as Donny van de Beek and Amad Diallo in part exchange.
But Atalanta have rejected these proposals, and they want an upfront fee for the Dane.
United will now test the Italians’ resolve, with Sport Italia reporting that the Red Devils will submit an opening bid that will include an upfront fee of £47m.
The offer will include a series of add-ons that could take the transfer to around £51m if Hojlund is successful at Old Trafford.
But Atalanta are likely to reject the bid, as they want an upfront fee of closer to £55m.
United will attempt to raise money to fund their move for Hojlund by offloading the likes of Anthony Elanga, Fred, Alex Telles and Dean Henderson.
Harry Maguire, Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial are also available for transfer.
